This tour takes us to the unique and magnificent archaeological site of Tipon where we enjoy the impressive irrigation system of the Incas, then to Piquillacta where we admire the huge urban planning of the Wari culture. After that we visit Andahuaylillas where is located “the Sixtine Chapel of America” with the impressive mural paintings from the XVII century.
TIPON: Tipon is said to be a royal garden commissioned by Wiracocha. It is one of the most elaborate examples of agricultural terracing created by the Incas. These tall terraces which run up the narrow valley are irrigated by an aqueduct from Pachatusan, the mountain above the site. In addition to the terracing there are also some other structures at Tipon, including baths, a temple complex, canals and aqueducts. Tipon is definitely one of the lesser visited sites in the Cusco area but it is equally as impressive as those in the Sacred Valley. The Tipon Archeological Complex is located 24 km southeast of Cusco.
PIKILLAQTA: Pikillacta is the only pre-Inca site in the Cusco area. This adobe complex was built around 700 to 900 years AD by the Huari Culture, in the area, there is a small Inca site just a short walk from Pikillacta, known as Rumicolca, a travel checkpoint for the Incas.
ANDAHUAYLILLAS: Here you find the "Sixtine Chapel of Peru", a church that is home to golden altars, paintings and many colored ceilings. The chapel is simple and unassuming on the outside, but on the inside you'll find masterpiece after masterpiece. Also some paintings from famous “Escuela Cuzqueña” can be appreciated.
We pick you up at your hotel at 9:00am or 1:00pm, and we drive in our private transport towards Andahuaylillas where we will visit the Saint Peter church of Andahuaylillas considered as the “Sixtine Chapel of America”. It was built by the Jesuits Order at the end of the 16th and the princes of the 17th century. Its architectural structure is typical for small towns´ churches. Its walls are wide like all the colonial buildings, made of sun dried bricks of mud (adobe), the facade is decorated with the magnificent murals and two stone columns projected towards the main entrance.
Although its ‘architecture is relatively modest, the decoration of its´ interiors is unique and impressive. We can first mention a picture of the “Virgin assumption”, painted by the Spanish historical painter Esteban Murillo. You will also see wall paintings attributed to Luís de Riaño (17th century). After time to visit the church, we continue with our journey towards the Pre-Inca archaeological site of Piquillacta where we will explore and enjoy the huge urban planning of the pre-Inca Wari culture, surrounded by stunning mountains and lakes.
Afterwards we continue our journey to the spectacular archaeological site of Tipon, where we will see the best of Inca hydraulic water work system. Finally we head back to the village of Tipon which is characterised by the sale of baked guinea pig, typical dish of the region of Cusco, where we will stop to taste it and then back to your hotel in Cusco.
